Day 1 Digging in Ben’s Garden – Tuesday 3rd July

Hi guys!  Its Sally here.

First day digging today which was great fun – working in blonde Ben’s back garden on St Martins.  We are looking for flint which is 3000 years old and has been shaped into tools.  We found a few pieces, has anyone else found any?

I also found a coin but we have to brush the mud off carefully later to see how old it is.

This morning I also went in and talked to the children in St Martins school, their knowledge was really good!  Looking forward to meeting some of the other children, I’m also visiting St Mary’s and Tresco later in the month.  Let me know if you’ve got any questions… has anyone found anything else you can tell me about?

All smiles with archaeological fun!

Hi guys! I am Blonde Ben’s sister and Ella’s aunt! – delighted to see that my bro’ has things of interest in his back garden. Have always been interested in archaeology – and have helped on ‘digs’ on the mainland, in the past, myself!

Will be over to the island later this month with my 14 yr old son and hope to learn more about your finds then. Hope you have been won over by the magic of the islands too – as well as the gorgeous island children – who needs Playstations whne you have Scilly as your back garden!!
    All the best, Kate

    Hi Kate,

thanks for the message, we certainly have realised the magic of Scilly! That’s great that you’re coming over – hopefully you can see us in time for National Archaeology Week and maybe come and look around or join in? We have a flint specialist analysing our skatter from Ben’s garden but hopefully we’ll be able to update you soon!

    Sally
